A family say they witnessed their own Christmas miracle when a bird built a nest in their Christmas tree and the eggs hatched among the decorations.

To make the magical event even more special, the homeowner had decorated the tree with a bird theme including shiny owl ornaments and glittery nests.

Two baby birds were born deep in the branches at a home in Sao Paulo state, Brazil, amid the ornaments, garlands and lights.

The mother bird built the nest and laid two small eggs and now the family watches and mum and her two youngsters hop about among the branches.

The mum is even tame enough to be stroked and sits on homeowner Re Braga’s hand.

She said she had decorated the tree with a bird theme this year, but never expected a real bird to nest.

“It was surprising. I didn’t expect anything like this. It was a pleasure to be with the mother of the baby birds. I was decorating the tree and she was making the nest. We set it up and they were born and now they are getting ready to leave,” she told Reuters.

She said her family leaves the doors and windows open so the birds can come and go as they please.

“I was there from the beginning, she was making the nest. She made the nest and I saw the eggs. There were two eggs. I didn’t know for sure if they would hatch because the mother spent a lot of time outside of the nest.

“She would come and go from one moment to the next. One day we were watching television, the door was closed and she began to make noise. We watched her with a baby in her mouth and we realised the babies were born,” she said.

Braga added that the appearance of the bird family drives home the message of Christmas.

She said: “The Christmas tree symbolises the gratitude for the birth of Jesus Christ, peace and the sense of life and that is reinforced with what happened here in our house. We are all very happy.”
