The elderly woman’s granddaughter, Gabriela Brandão, pointed out the small statue actually showed elf king Elrond
The elderly woman only realised her error after her granddaughter, Gabriela Brandão, pointed out the small statue actually showed elf king Elrond.
Gabriela, a freelance make-up artist from Florianópolis, Brazil, posted pictures of the doll on Facebook, saying: “The funniest discovery of 2016.”
She wrote: “My daughter’s great-grandmother prays to this figure of Saint Anthony every day.”
“But looking more closely… “
Her grandma had thought she was praying every day to Saint Anthony – a Portuguese Catholic priest and friar – who is often depicted in a brown robe.
But after taking a closer look at the figurine, Gabriela decided to look it up on the internet.
The make-up artist realised it was actually the character Elrond, who is played by Hugo Weaving in the film franchise.
Gabriela told BuzzFeed: “We tried to explain right away but she didn’t understand at first.
“The next day we explained again and she understood and we got her a new figure of Saint Anthony.”
Her post attracted more than 3,000 likes and hundreds of comments on Facebook.
